When I was living in New Orleans, my parents came to visit for a few days,
before going on to Georgia to visit my brother. I took them out on the
Honey Island Swamp tour. Out there in the bayou, in the morning sun, we saw
some of the most gorgeous snakes I have ever seen. Even my mother, and
avowed despiser of snakes, had to admit that the colors were very pretty
(she couldn't bring herself to admit that the snakes themselves were
pretty).

I don't know if we'd have the same aversions if the religion of the dominant
culture was different. I had one little kid tell me very firmly that a
snake (any snake) was the devil because it said so in the Bible. I tried to
explain reptiles, but he wasn't having any of it. When I let the kiddies
touch the snake, he had a go and it was really hard for me not to taunt him
for touching Satan.

Aggie, I have been meaning to tell you that I really love the way you keep
altering the base sig of "Aggie" to fit the mood of your post...It is almost
to the point where I open your posts to see how you signed them (but not
quite - the content is usually worth reading also).
